Say Anything with our Squad: Jess King

Meet Jess King — a badass lady and a founding member of our afloat squad. In this week’s Say Anything with the Squad, we sat down with Jess to talk about afloat and her mission to keep spreading good vibes. Just search ‘Good Vibe Tribe’ on the app and join her! Thanks Jess for keeping us all afloat!

1. Tell us about your afloat groups!

Immediately, I joined the Hospital Hill Heroes, and a group of my own creation: The Good Vibe Tribe. Hospital Hill Heroes speaks straight to my soul because of my niece, Millie. She was born with a congenital heart defect and spent a good amount of time with the wonderful staff at Children’s Mercy in her early days. She is now five and thriving!

The Good Vibe Tribe is a casual group open to anyone and everything. The group is for giving: Did you just finish a great hardback book that you’d love to pass along? Perfect! Were you gifted a candle/lotion/bath bomb that just doesn’t suit your senses? Don’t just stash it away- pass it along. The group is for support: Do you need a hand with dinner? Do you need a cup of coffee? Do you just need someone to talk to? We may not be in the same boat, but we’re all in the same ocean- and that’s the basis of the Good Vibe Tribe.

2. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

Teleportation. Easy. Life has graciously taken me through a lot of different places over the last few years and that means that I’ve created lifelong bonds with people I don’t get to see every day/week/month/or year. I hate missing the BIG moments in my friend’s lives. I wish I could do the “Bewitched” nose-wiggle and be there for it all!

3. What does being a member of the afloat squad mean to you?

So many people want to help, and don’t know the right outlet for it. Being part of the squad lets me connect my friends and show them that being connected during this crazy time is actually easier than ever. We have the ability to be a voice for a platform that promotes the BEST in humanity.

4. What’s your go-to self-care?

I wish I could say something inspiring like meditation or yoga. Truth is, I suck at the tree pose, and my house is never quiet enough for meditation. My go-to self care is being with the people I love – whatever that means. Also, a bubble bath and glass of red wine :).

5. Tell us about your company, Fitz KC.

Fitz KC started as a pandemic project back in June! I work for Hallmark, and was placed on furlough for a short time due to Covid- which turned out to be a blessing! I had time to refocus my creative energy towards my own ideas. My sister, who has a natural talent for interior design, turned me on to a few companies with incredible pattern designs. My inspiration grew and I let my creativity run! I’m a HUGE book nerd, and F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of my favorites. So when it came to naming a company, I included two things that always warm my heart: Fitz and Kansas City! The last six months have been a whirlwind of trying to teach myself the nuances of social media, along with new techniques in clay and painting. Regardless of what else 2020 held, it will always be the year that I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, took a risk, and invested in my own passion project.

6. If you could give one thing from one of our gifting partners to three of your best friends, what would it be and why?

Swoon cookies – both dreamy and delicious!
